Increasing urbanisation is one of the main reasons public transport in the Netherlands will look very different in the future - not only in sparsely populated areas where regular public transport is no longer profitable, but also in cities, where underground trains and light rail services are essential.
The 'Toekomstbeeld OV' (future image of public transport), initiated by the Dutch government, outlines a vision where trains connect the larger cities with few intermediate stops, more space for PT will be created in the Randstad metropolitan area, and sparsely populated areas will be made accessible through new concepts and services, such as car sharing and e-bikes.
Efforts are directed at creating a large network with direct connections to busy spots in cities with short wait times, and underground trains, light rail vehicles and buses running at high frequency. It is important to experiment with new mobility concepts, such as the development of existing bus stops into larger 'transfer locations' with room for conventional cars and bicycles as well as car sharing, e-bikes and shared taxis, in order to achieve increased convenience for travellers.
Furthermore, several airports will investigate the possibility of self-driving vehicles for quick transportation of travellers from nearby train stations and transport hubs.

Support in the areas of resource allocation and financing
In order to optimise PT, an increasing number of parties have to work together, e.g. provinces, city regions, municipalities and PT providers. Reduced services at the 'lower end' of public transport (cutting out or straightening certain routes, reducing stops, reduced services at night / during weekends) have raised questions with regard to collaboration and distribution. Panteia supports these collaborations by providing advice and consultancy on distribution of costs and gains, and about financing mobility. On an international scale, Panteia provides governments with advice on institutional structures, tendering and procurement.
From Big Data to unique information
[INVALID]d on our knowledge and experience in the field of mobility and our experience with processing large amounts of data (Big Data), Panteia is able to translate data into information that can be used to improve PT and mobility. For example, we play a leading role in the analysis of data from the Dutch chip card for public transport, the OV-chipkaart analysis of OV-chipkaart data.
European Commission and European networks
The European Commission determines the policy context for Dutch organisations in several ways. Panteia directly consults the European Commission on the development and evaluation of policy, including public transport policy. Panteia also participates in research programmes that are financed by the European Commission.
