The European social model faces serious challenges from a rapidly changing global economy, technological innovation, an ageing population and a changing workforce.

The pace of these changes means that Europe must look ahead and adapt the current approaches to education, work, and social life as a whole. This translates to a need to anticipate and manage the restructuring of these policy areas, to invest in the necessary skills for a knowledge economy, and to design national social systems to reach a better balance between flexibility and security. The changes affecting how we work affect the educational needs of the European workforce, and this in turn also affects the form which the national social security systems and other areas of social life should take.

Grasping and dealing with these many and interconnected changes is no small matter. It requires multidisciplinary expertise to properly understand and research these various interrelated policy areas. Panteia has just the multidisciplinary staff to do so. From its inception, a large proportion of Panteia’s research has been in the fields of employment and social affairs. Partly due to Panteia’s strong position within the Dutch market, we have built an impressive track record of research projects for international clients. Our broad experience and expertise in social affairs and employment has also led to a number of clients deploying Panteia in a supportive capacity.

When looking more closely at the policy areas which are connected to employment and social affairs, Panteia has considerable experience at regional, national and international levels. Over the last few years we have executed assessments, monitoring, evaluations, and analyses in the following areas:

  • Labour market and mobility: labour-market developments (national, regional and sectoral); reintegration of the unemployed, harmonisation of education and the labour market, labour supply – demand and discrepancies, the free movement of workers within the EU, flexibility, ESF and other funds, and the implementation of the European Employment Strategy in the different Member State's;
  • Social inclusion and social protection: legislation and programmes to counter discrimination, ESF, fighting poverty, inclusive entrepreneurship, discrimination and promote fundamental rights, enhancing integration of people with disabilities, and improve equal opportunities for women and men;
  • Working conditions: social dialogue, labour law, quality of work and employment including health and safety at work, and corporate social responsibility;
  • Skills and Human Capital: harmonisation of education and the labour market, skills mismatch policies, qualifications, continued (adult) vocational education and training, recognition of acquired competences, Life Long Learning and age management strategies;
  • Education and Culture: quality of early childhood care and education, improving the transition between education and employment, communication and media.
