Results of study on Safe and Secure Parking Places for Trucks available now!

published: 12-03-2019

Currently in the EU there is a shortage of facilities that enable safe and secure parking of trucks which also provide a minimum level of services to cater for the social well-being of the drivers.

A denser network of safe and secure truck parking areas (SSTPAs) with a clear definition of security levels, tackles this problem. Drivers, transport companies, forwarders, shippers and insurers, and the society as a whole will benefit from via the protection of drivers, cargo and transport equipment. Furthermore, such facilities can have a considerable positive impact on road safety, through well rested and stress-free drivers.

A study on Safe and Secure Parking Places for Trucks was carried out for the European Commission by a consortium comprising the following partners:

  • Panteia (lead)
  • CBRA
  • IRU
  • DEKRA
  • ESPORG
  • CERTH/HIT

The study started on 22 December 2017 and lasted one year.

The final study report can be found here.  And via this link the following deliverables can be accessed:

  • A common standard and rating system for security and service.
  • Auditing responsibilities and guidelines to ensure reliability.
  • Comprehensive maps indicating at which locations SSTPAs are needed.
  • Recommendations for the basis of a common application program interface (API) for the exchange of dynamic data between SSTPAs and information platforms.
  • Manuals to support the preparation of business plans for the setup of SSTPAs.

The European Commission is making available CEF-funding to promote safe and secure parking areas. These deliverables help to submit quality proposals.
